2008 new years resolutions

here are my resolutions...(i'm making them up post jan 1, but who cares really? i'll try to put up more as i think of them)

  1. i know i will always be very ambitious and at the same time very laid back [but not concurrently]...and it drives me nuts sometimes...so maybe, i will try to remain ambitious, but more consistently instead of trying to do something that can't be done and then being lazy the next couple days: try doing less every day....rambling....summary: set goals on a day by day basis
  2. i am tolerant and i stand up for myself when i need be, but i would like to be less tolerant actually, so that i can propel desired change in my life quicker and be happier. i'm not saying that i'm going to be ignorant, just looking more out for number 1 this year. too much patience can be a fault.
  3. be more balanced
  4. consistent sleep cycle (good luck on this one)
  5. less alcohol, more exercise, healthy eating. i did pretty good on this last year and would like to continue this trend.
  6. this item will probably be the hardest for me to fulfill but i think it would be beneficial to practice daily meditation/breathing. (in all seriousness)

flashlights of the past and future

an observation: in sci-fi shows, whether made 30 years ago or in the present and whether set in the past or distant future, the technology of flashlights has not evolved at all...don't believe me? watch anything sci-fi...you would think that in the future we would learn to modify the dual nature of light somehow...nope just regular old flashlights down caves and abysses and underwater and in space...

Fare ye well, Guitar World Acoustic

i'm disappointed to hear that the only guitar magazine that i respected, Guitar World Acoustic, is no longer producing issues.

most of the issues were great and produced new songs that i had not heard of before and grew to enjoy. the magazine was only released bimonthly, an as such, it was eagerly anticipated and i have every issue of the last seven years (over 40).

on the bright side, now i have time to go back to the old issues and learn the songs that i didn't get around to.

doppelgangers

mike fisher and ethan hawke

ethan hawke on the right in street clothes, and in ottawa uniform on the left
tom hanks vs mark recchi

few NHLers have had the longevity of Tom Hanks
four generations

so, i saw "bullitt" for the first time a while ago...and i thought that steve macqueen looked familiar...then it hit me that he could be daniel craig's father...but i was not finished here. i tried to google two similar images, but they were mostly of the old macqueen compared to the younger craig. being hetero, and not wanting to look at too many images of the two, i realized that instead of making macqueen = craig, i could produce macqueen from craig and the simpson's moe szyslaks. further more, hockey great brett hull could be produced from craig and macqueen....

doubt it? take a look at the results...i think they speak for themselves (had i not given the lengthy, lengthy explanation)

salsa anecdote

so, last night i was going to snack on some tortillas with salsa while watching some tv. i was adjusting my seating arrangement and inadvertently knocked the jar of salsa from off it's place on my coffee-table-like piece of furniture.

in the slowed down moment that was its fall to the carpet, i had time to think "no problem, it will all fall in one place".

i could not be more wrong, it exploded everywhere, the initial blast radius being the area under my futon. i quickly grabbed some cloths to clean it up. while cleaning, i saw that salsa shrapnel had reached the top of my futon, a blanket on the futon, and pillows. after applying carpet cleaner (handy to have when you're spilly mcgee) i found some more salsa behind one end of the futon (the jar fell at the diametrically [i know big words, and i occasionally like to (mis)use them] opposite end of the futon).

after tv, i was tired and decided to crash on the cleaned up futon. pushing the coffee table away from arms reach (so as not to kick off my laptop in the night) i felt some sticky goo on the coffee table arm. it had been salsanated.

i got up, turned on a light and cleaned it up. while waking this morning, my eyes gazed upwards and saw salsa on the ceiling!! i have a fairly high ceiling, i'll guestimate it at 9.5 feet. using some high school kinematics equations, i can say that despite it's 2 foot freefall, making it have a velocity of about -3.6m/s when it hit the floor, the salsa had to have an initial upward velocity of atleast 7.7m/s. Thus making the "rubber coefficient" - (f%&* it, it's been 6 years since i took a physics course) of the floor fantastic. crazy!

Words of Wisdom

Happiness is to see the world in a grain of sand, and Heaven in a wild flower, to hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in a single hour.

Tom Petty - Waiting For Tonight ()

Just out walking, letting my mind roam
If she hung around too much I might take her for granted
But when I was away, she seemed an angel
The only one who really cared about me
The only one without an angle
For so long I've been lonely
Now I'm too weak to fight

I've been waiting for tonight
I've been waiting for tonight
